What are Product Definitions?

Product Definitions are used for generating and tracking Retail (SGTIN96) RFID tags using GS1 GTIN14 numbers.  You can read more about the GTIN14 encoding scheme from GS1.  GTIN14's underpin every retail RFID tag and are used to uniquely identify a product being tagged.

A Product Definition consists of the following required fields:

  • Company Identifier - One piece of a GTIN14. It is used to identify which Company owns the product.
  • Product Identifier - The 2nd piece of a GTIN14.  It is used to identify a specific product owned by the above company.
  • Name - The name field is used to provide a human readable value to associate with the product.
The GTIN14 combines the above Company and Product identifiers into a single 14 digit number to unique identify a product.

Optional Product Definition fields:

  • Description - Used to provide a short description about the product.
  • Custom Fields - You can define and associate multiple custom fields against each product definition.  These can be things like "color", "size", etc...  Read more about Custom Fields on our Blog.

Tracking Serials / Serialization

RFIDLinked automatically manages serialization on a per Product Definition basis.  Any tags generated/printed via a Product Definition will record which serials have been used and allow for auditing of those serials for compliance.
